Beautiful Lake Rhodhiss

The natural beauty around Lake Rhodhiss is breathtaking. Lake Rhodhiss is your gateway to the beautiful North Carolina Blue Ridge Mountains. This luxurious lake is a popular place to enjoy swimming, boating, skiing, and fishing. The area is home to a large variety of different species of fish. There are many fishing tournaments held on the lake year-round.

Residents will enjoy the ninety miles of shoreline and 3,000 acres of natural, pure water. The water gets its color due to the lake’s sandy bottom as opposed to the murky waters that a clay bottom produces. When you come home to the Lakeside Reserve you can enjoy the peaceful waters of Lake Rhodhiss, relax on your dock, and enjoy the beautiful sunsets on the water from these private wooded lakefronts.

Linville Gorge Wilderness

Linville Gorge is one of Eastern America's most scenic and rugged gorges, created by the scouring action of the Linville River. Sometimes it is referred to as the "Grand Canyon of Eastern USA." The steep walls of the Gorge enclose the Linville River for 12 miles. Elevation ranges from 4,000 ft. atop Hawksbill Mountain to 2,000 ft. at the river on the valley floor. The 12,000-acre Linville Gorge Wilderness Area in the western North Carolina Mountains is part of the Pisgah National Forest.

Located in Burke County, the Gorge is so rugged that it was spared the clear-cut logging that was happening in much of the eastern forests after the turn of the century. Hike and camp in the Gorge’s virgin forest with spectacular overlooks, including iconic Table Rock and Hawksbill.

Beautiful Hickory, North Carolina

With its moderate climate and sweeping mountain views, the Hickory-Lenoir-Morganton area, sometimes known as the Catawba Valley, is a home for retirees and families and is becoming a destination for young professionals as well. The region is starting to see growth from Charlotte, which is just an hour's drive south from Hickory, and sees influence from beer- and art-loving Asheville, just an hour west into the mountains.

With growth on the horizon, new businesses including restaurants, retail stores and bars are popping up.

The area’s past is in furniture, hosiery and textiles, the birthplace of brands like Broyhill and Bernhardt. Now, the area’s industry has bounded beyond its roots into new technologies and data; tech giants Google and Apple both have data centers here.

The region has strong artistic roots as well. Sculptures from local and regional artists abound, and art galleries are in each of the towns.

Valdese & Morganton, North Carolina

Valdese, founded on the traditions of 19th century Waldensian settlers and their historic journey from the hills of Italy to this area of Burke County. Stop by the Visitor Center in the historic Rock School for many ideas for things to do, including Waldensian Museum, Trail of Faith, Old Rock School Art Galleries, and the Piedmont and Western Railroad Club's model train museum.

The fun picturesque town of Morganton is located in Burke County, about 63 miles east of downtown Asheville. Its location along I-40 makes it very convenient to stop for the visit in the foothills. Little known fact: This area is the oldest known European inland settlement in the United States, with Spanish explorers settling in the village of Joara in 1567!

We love to explore the charming downtown, centered around the stately historic courthouse. For a small town, you'll be impressed with the number of artists, performing arts, shopping and events. The City of Morganton Municipal Auditorium (CoMMA) hosts plays, Broadway musicals, graduations, and other cultural and public events. Stop by to see their fresco anytime! Don't miss the interesting down-home History Museum that transports you through the rich history of this area.

Grandfather Mountain

Grandfather Mountain is an iconic peak 75 miles north of Asheville, N.C. just off of the Blue Ridge Parkway in Western North Carolina. The area is known for its incredible vistas and unmatched ecological diversity. On a clear day at Grandfather Mountain (elevation 5,946 feet), you can see the Charlotte skyline 90 miles away.

The area is called Grandfather Mountain because of early pioneers who recognized "the face" of an old man on one of the cliffs, which provides access to the famous Mile High Swinging Bridge, wildlife habitats and the Wilson Center for Nature Discovery.

The easiest way to experience Grandfather Mountain is by exploring the family-friendly, non-profit park attraction (not a state or national park), which provides access to the famous Mile High Swinging Bridge, wildlife habitats and nature museum. Included in the park is Forrest Gump Curve, the scene of one of the locations where Tom Hanks' character runs in the movie Forrest Gump.

The backcountry area adjacent to the private attraction is known as Grandfather Mountain State Park and is most often accessed by experienced hikers.*
